Sperm Whale Spotted off the Coast of Sóller

22 June 2019

Mallorca was host to a special guest recently when a 200,000 kg specimen decided to swim with one of the locals just off the coast of Port Sóller. An unusual but welcome sight from the usual jellyfish that tend to infest the waters of the Balearics this time of year.

The whale has been identified as a male sperm whale which can grow up to 20.5 meters (67 ft), in length. This is the second deepest diving mammal, followed by the Cuvier’s beaked whale.

Sperm whales are a pelagic mammal with a worldwide range, migrating seasonally for feeding and breeding.

Another fun fact is that the sperm whale has the largest brain on earth - - more than five times heavier than a human's.

Mallorca is no stranger to special sea faring guests. Mallorca was visited last year by an enormous shark between Mallorca and the Island of Cabrera. Check out the story here: Sharks In Mallorca?
